Gardening under the pines in Los Monteros
Umbrella pines give lovely shade, but little grows well under a thick crown. Needles cover lawns and beds, block gutters and end up in the pool. Close to the beach, sandy soil drains quickly and the sea air dries out leaves.
- Rake pine needles from lawns and beds regularly so they do not smother plants.
- Have long pine branches over the roof or pool reduced by a tree surgeon.
- Choose shade-tolerant plants for beds under the pines.
- Prune palms every year and check them for red palm weevil.
- Add compost or mulch to sandy beds so they hold water for longer.
